FTSE 100 companies still falling behind in online search
Half of the UK's biggest companies lose sales by failing to exploit targeted search
engine marketing

Research conducted recently by The Search Works has revealed that 55% of the official websites of FTSE 100 companies did not appear on the first page of results for a simple online search using keywords. Last year this figure was 65%, so although improvements are being made, these companies are still failing to keep pace with the fastest growing area in marketing, search engine marketing (SEM).

Group CEO, Nick Hynes: ""It's encouraging to see that more FTSE 100 companies have begun to recognise the importance of SEM but what we are seeing is a widening gulf in highly competitive sectors, between companies embracing the complexities of search, and getting it right, and those being left behind."

 Search Tip

Bid on misspellings

On Overture in January, there were just over 1,400,000 searches for the term 'loan'. To be in position 1, an advertiser had to pay £5.80 per click and be competing with 117 other loan companies. In the same month, there were just under 600 searches for 'lon'. To be in position 1, an advertiser had to pay £1.60 and was only competing with 8 other loan companies. With a descriptive title and description, appearing on misspellings becomes a very good source of traffic.

Whilst we certainly recommend appearing on the generic search terms as well, it is also a good idea to appear the misspellings.
