Nick Hynes, chief executive of search engine marketing provider The Search Works, says the UK market has grown massively in the past five years. "IAB statistics show search marketing is bigger than radio and bigger than cinema," he says.

Data quoted by The Search Works suggests 90 per cent of online purchases originate from search engine listings, while 60 per cent of searches begin with the purpose of an online purchase in mind.

Hynes says there are 100,000 advertisers involved with search marketing across Europe, led by early adopter sectors such as financial services and travel.
